Our House of Straw is a unique B&B built from wood, straw, hemp and clay. Due to its location you can enjoy the city but also enjoy the rural nature of North Holland that is just around the corner.
The B&B has two double rooms. Both have a private bathroom with an environmentally friendly shower, shampoo and a hairdryer. The rooms are furnished with wonderful beds which are 220cm long and Hue LED lighting. We have selected the furniture with care. You can make free coffee with the Nespresso machine and there is a kettle for organic tea or a cup of soup. And of course you can’t do without fast WiFi, so that’s what we have.
We think it is important to use as little energy as possible, but we do like comfort! That is why the shower water is heated as much as possible by the sun. The house is heated by heat from the ground. The heating is in the walls and in the bathroomfloor.
Our attractive street with trees and modern architecture is quiet, safe and cozy. At the end of the street is a good restaurant with terrace. A large park also starts there and there is natural swimming lake. For groceries you walk 3 minutes or you go to the supermarket a little further away.
The center is within easy reach. Tram 26 takes you to the Central Station in ±12 minutes and leaves every 5-10 minutes. The stop is a 3-minute walk away.
Rural North Holland is close by. Historical places such as Durgerdam, Edam, Enkhuizen, Volendam, Marken and the Zaanse Schans with their wooden houses and charming churches can be easily discovered from here by car or bicycle.

We would like to welcome you!
We are Merel and Frank with our children Anna and Ivan. We have lived in Amsterdam since 1986 and in the Huis van Stro since 2021.
Merel works at an educational institution. She likes cycling, shopping and cutting plants that she likes.
Frank is busy renovating the house and also enjoys going to the theater, a movie or a museum.
Our adult children Anna and Ivan work and study in Amsterdam.
We enjoy surprising our guests with this special house and giving them a wonderful time in Amsterdam and the region.
The accommodation
Our House of Straw is a unique B&B built from wood, straw, hemp and clay. Due to its location you can enjoy the city but also enjoy the rural nature of North Holland that is just around the corner.
You won’t meet many people in this special family home. There are four of us living there and there are a maximum of four guests. We try to take each other into account as much as possible.
The house has walls made of hemp with a thick layer of clay on top. This creates an atmosphere but also a pleasant indoor climate. You notice this as soon as you enter the house.
Your room is on the 2nd floor. On the way up, the lighting switches on automatically and you see the thick clay walls. You can also take a peek into our backyard and the loft with a beautiful chandelier. This creates a romantic atmosphere, especially when it is dark. On the first floor we have hung art from a number of Dutch photographers. You’re invited to take a good look.
On the second floor there is a cupboard containing a number of books and maps of the city of Amsterdam. In the same cupboard there are also a number of nutritious biscuits that are delicious when you just need them. Painkillers, plasters, sanitary towels, a charger or a game are also in the cupboard. It’s all there for you to make your stay here as worry-free as possible.
